The Hive Mind Stirs. It looks back toward the planet it had just left. An airless rock, the planet's crust breaking and falling back into the mantle. The gestalt mind turned toward the new genes it had acquired. Sifting and sorting. It projected benefits and disadvantages to incorporating each into the hive. Limited value it decides. But it will remember. It places them into the gene keepers. These microscopic parts of the Hive will reproduce throughout the life of the hive, providing for the time with the genes will be needed. The Hive climbs out of the star's gravity well. On the way, it passes other planets, void of life. Some of these are set upon by parts of the hive, eager to strip valuable gasses and minerals. But the hive spends little time or energy on them. Although just sated, the hunger begins to grow again. Not the hunger for energy providing food, but the hunger to consume and incorporate new genetic material. The Hive Mind looks back at the star and the lifeless worlds. Something deep within itself mourns that it cannot completely consume both planets and star, leaving only a stellar void. One day it will find a creature that can consume even the stars, and once absorbed, the Hive will leave nothing behind. All will become Hive. Now it passes through the outer shell of asteroids, beyond any true planetary body. Most of the Hive is in hibernation or has been reabsorbed to make room for the creatures that will be needed at the next feeding. The Hive Mind twists slightly and a hole opens to Other Space. The Hive Fleet slips through the hole. Huge wings extend to catch the currents of Other Space, and the Hive Fleet gains speed. The Hive Mind is less comfortable here than in Normal Space. Parts of the Hive long asleep awaken to give better sight and hearing. The Hive is pleased that as it passes, a long shadow follows. And Other Space pushes against the mind, spreading out in long wakes with the Hive's passage. Strange creatures appear, drawn by the power of the Hive Mind. Tentacles of mental energy lash out and draw the hapless creatures in to be completely absorbed. Not as gratifying as taking the genes from Normal Space, but will sustain the Hive as it travels. The Hive Mind scans this strange reality. Assessing what it sees. For a moment it glances one that it can scare believe. It is a devourer of stars! But it is also too strong for the hive. The hive will have to grow in size and power. But it will remember. It will return to bring that one into itself. The Hive Mind twists again and the Hive Fleet slips back to Normal Space. It begins to slide down the gravity well toward a pair of Orange stars. Assessing the star system, it alters course slightly toward a tempting blue world. It begins to awaken parts of itself preparing the spores that will herald its coming... by Brian Bell
