Overwatch Rules
Intro
Overwatch is the ability to move into possition and be able to take opprotunity
fire on enemy targets. This is based on the
Stargrunt II Overwatch Rules
by Thomas Barclay.
Action
Overwatch is a a combat action. Instead of a unit taking another combat action
it may go on overwatch. If a unit does this, place an overwatch counter for the
unit. Overwatch lasts until the unit is activated next turn or the Overwatch
is voided (see Restrictions).
Restrictions
- Unit to be placed on overwatch may not move more than half of its movement
allowance.
-
May not be done by units under suppression.
-
Overwatch is voided if the unit is under fire. That is recieves an
"Under Fire" marker (see Dirtside II p. 24).
-
Overwatch replaces a units Combat Action for the turn
-
Overwatch is voided if the unit is reactivated by a commander.
(See optional rules on Command Reactivation).
-
Overwatch must be performed by the entire unit. Elements of the unit may
not perform other combat actions (communication, etc.).
-
A unit that has an element with a "Systems Down" marker, may go
on Overwatch. Obviously, the Systems Down unit may not partcipate if the
unit performs an Overwatch Activation. That element, however, is allowed to
perform a repair attempts.
Overwatch Activation
- A unit on Overwatch may conduct a Combat Action, except Close
Assault, if an ememy unit moves within the watched area.
- An enemy unit that conducts a Combat Action does not allow
activation by a unit on Overwatch.
- Following the Overwatch Combat Action, the Overwatch counter ro the unit
is removed.
- Like Opportunity Fire, Overwatch Activation takes place during the
opponent's movement. It is resolved in the same manner as Opportunity Fire
(see Dirtside II p. 20).
- Unlike Opportunity Fire, Overwatch Activation does not cause the
command marker of the unit doing the Overwatch Action to flip. It is
considered the Combat Action of the unit's previous Activation.
Example:
-
Unit A, a fast tracked tank unit, moves 1/2 of its movement (6").
-
Unit A goes on Overwatch. It flips its Leadership counter to indicate that
it has completed its activation.
-
Other units acitvate, move and fire. No opponents enter the watched area.
-
All units have activate, so the turn ends. All leadership counters are
flipped face up (including Unit A's counter).
-
Opponent Infantry Unit X moves into watched area.
-
Unit A may opt to take an Overwatch Action, but decides to wait for a
better target.
-
Opponenet Armor Unit Y moves into the watched area.
-
Unit A declares that he is performing an Overwatch Activation.
-
Combat is resolved as per the Opportunity Fire rules (p. 20).
-
Unit A's Overwatch counter is removed. Unit A's Leadership counter is
not flipped.
-
Opponent Armor Unit Y, whats left of it, finishes its movement and performs
a combat action.
-
Unit A activates. It moves into range of Unit Y. It then takes a combat
action to fire on Unit Y.
