Exploration Cruiser "UNSC Francis Morgan"
- Midjump to System R-143

Capt. Ward Whately had forgotten how to dream. He had not even had a daydream since he was a teenager. Now in his late 30's it had become a valuable asset. Most people experienced dehabilitating, or at least disorienting, dreams during a Jump. Some people even have psychotic episodes as a result of a Jump. The human mind just cannot manage all the mixed signals that is fed to it from senses tore out of normal space and flung across the galaxy. Capt. Whately did not dream, and so had a very quick recovery from a Jump. That was until today.

He was standing looking to the sky. White lights layed on a felt black cloth. He felt no movement, but the stars were moving. Beneith his feet was nothing but space. He looked for constellations, but could not recognize any, despite his extensive training. He was all alone in the universe.

Suddenly, he was being followed. He could not see his pursuer. But he knew it was there. It because it was some type of amorphious...thing. Silver with tenticles that streached out of it and then were reabsorbed. How it moved or how it tracked him was unknown. All that Capt. Whately knew was that it was after him. And it was fast!

Not knowing how he moved, he willed himself to go faster. The stars flew by. The stars were turning into streakes. But still it came. The faster he flew, the faster it came. It was gaining. Suddenly a man blocked his way. He was darker than the space between the stars. "Remember" it said. The word echoed in Whately's mind. And with it an image: A vertical line with 2 lines branching to the left and one branching to the right.
